The students at my school walk into the building each day ready to take on whatever challenges may arise. They have smiles on their faces ready to learn.
I am the Title I Reading teacher for grades K-6th in a school with 89% of the students receiving free or reduced lunches.
Many students at my school receive backpack food on the weekend. Despite so many hardships, our students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful!
My Project
Why does it matter if students have a choice in how or where they sit? Every student learns differently and every student has his or her own way he or she is most comfortable to learn. When students are more comfortable they are able to focus better on the task at hand. Therefore Seating Choices are important in a student's education.
Think about where you enjoy reading: Do you sit at a desk, in a straight back chair, or do you like to sit in a more comfortable position?
I, myself, enjoy sitting criss-cross applesauce in a nice comfy chair or pillow to read. I focus better when I am seated more comfortably. What about you? I am asking for my students to have options for seating. I would like to let them have a choice of a Kore Wobble Chair, which allows students to sit on a stool and wobble as they learn, or to use a regular chair with an Inflated Stability Balance Disc so they can wiggle while they are learning. I am also asking for 2 Big Joe Roma Chairs which are like bean bag chairs but with a back to them. This will allow students a more comfortable position for reading!
Most of the students I teach have difficult learning and having a different seating choice helps the students stay focused on the learning task. It also allows students to have a choice in his or her learning. When students are allowed to take ownership of his or her learning they try harder, they want to do their best, and they are more successful!
