If you were to walk into my classroom, you would see an eager, engaged, and determined group of students who are excited to learn. My job is easy when I think of how much they love coming to school everyday. They are a diverse group of 22 third graders who are ready to learn.
My students thrive when they have the freedom to choose how they want to work in a personalized environment each day.
I want to teach them how things in our classroom are relevant to the real world so they are staying interested not only in the content we are covering, but also in life and how the world works. Encouraging this interest in them now will motivate them to continue learning not only in school, but may even spark a passion in them to continue their work professionally, in college and beyond.
My Project
With the two requested stability ball chairs, my students can work independently or with partners in these portable chairs that can be moved throughout the classroom, giving students the ability to work in a space that is comfortable for their learning. The chair base will help keep these in excellent condition so they can't pop due to staples or rocks on the carpet. Students can use the two ottoman benches in the library during independent reading time. These can also act as storage in our growing classroom library to house books and materials. For students who enjoy sitting on floor, the two cushions will provide a comfortable place to sit so they aren't distracted from their work trying to get comfortable.
These alternative seating options will help students with attention problems by allowing them to feel physically ready to learn academic content.
They do not have to sit in the same area each day, but by giving them the choice, they can decide how they are best comfortable to learn for the day.
