Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a diverse background with many having difficulty in day to day simple needs. Their focus is often distracted by these needs and require outlets for supporting their movement. I use many strategies for their learning and have had great success in supporting them academically. To add to this support I want to build a classroom with excitement through alternative seating. All of my students would directly benefit by providing them with a classroom that is fun and attractive to learning but also supportive of their needs.
My Project
Student choice and voice are king in my class. Learning environments can have a direct impact on student achievement and their perception of learning. In my classroom currently we are supplied with standard desks and chairs. While we can arrange these in different groupings, it is with great effort and noise. We are a one to one technology school and this year have changed curriculum to all online. With this shift, flexible seating through the use of floor stadium seating and small table trays would be a wonderful update to seating.
Giving students the ability to choose their location and seating builds their self concept of control of learning.
Students who are comfortably seated are more engaged. With the different types of seating chosen, my students will not only be engaged but excited about their choice of locations! Building groups through the use of colorful rugs will be accomplished with less confusion and less time. All students including those with special needs will be able to easily self-advocate for what is best in their learning area by having mobility and choice of location.
Math is often a source of nervousness and unknown to students. It is my belief that flexible seating will invite students in and build excitement for learning. Students who are excited about their learning are more willing to take risks and lead others. Flexible seating will support this process and make my room the math room students want to be in! Please fund this project to support my students.
