Our school is located in a Downtown area. The school building is one of the oldest schools in our district with over 80+ years of history. Some of my parents told me that they attended the same school and stayed in the same kindergarten classroom that their children now attend. I once met my student's grandfather who studied in the same kindergarten classroom many years ago. One of the statements that I often heard from these former students is that "This room looks a lot smaller than I thought!".
Our historic kindergarten classroom is small and inadequate to accommodate the modern requirement of a versatile classroom.
A modern kindergarten classroom should have enough space to provide a carpet area, play area, drawing, area, library corner, computer center, small group study area, and large instruction area. With all these study areas, there is little room for the 24 kindergarten students to move around in our small classroom.
A constant challenge in the classroom is flexible seating space. How do I provide enough space in the classroom to allow 24 kindergarten students to move around without bumping into each other all the time? Such a challenge requires creative thinking for seating arrangement.
My Project
Space is limited in a small kindergarten classroom. To name a few, we need to provide a carpet area, play area, drawing area, computer station, library corner, etc. My class recently received some Chromebooks to set up computer stations. We are blessed to have received the Chromebooks for our students to learn foundation skills through technology. However, it also posts a challenge for space and seating arrangement.
We do not have enough classroom chairs to provide flexible seating arrangement for our students.
For example, we do not have enough chairs for every Chromebooks at the computer stations. Some of my students have to stand in order to use the Chromebooks. We need more chairs for the computer stations.
A creative solution is to purchase folding benches for the computer stations. Folding benches provide flexible seating arrangement and do not take up a lot of space in the classroom. Each bench can seat 6 little kindergarten students comfortably. They can be used for outdoor activities as well. With four benches, I can easily accommodate my students in different study groups. For example, some of my students can work at the computer station. Some can work in small group with the teacher. Some can work at the drawing or writing station.
We hope to receive funding from DonorsChoose.org to buy four folding benches so that my students can sit down while they are working at the computer station.
