I work with a population of students in a suburb in Texas. We are two years out from Harvey and still attending schools in portables. This year marks the beginning of our third year to attend school in a makeshift campus, and we are slowly making it feel more like home.
We have finally demolished our old building and will be breaking ground on a new school within the next year!
As excited as we are about being able to get back into a real building, we know the process will be long and slow. So in order to keep the students engaged and focus we continue to rebuild what we lost.
My Project
My student population base is often made up of students with sensory needs, as well as students with impulse control issues. Having a flexible seating arrangement will help them be seated in the correct spot for them to learn in the most successful way. When students have the flexibility and choice to move around the room and sit where they are most comfortable their engagement goes up, because they feel more comfortable. I want to provide my students with every opportunity I can.
Using things like floor cushions, wobble seats, and clipboards help your most active students stay focused and engaged in the classroom activity.
It also sets them up for success in the school year!
