Our students are working hard to learn despite the extreme challenges they face. Not only do many of them live with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, sensory disorders and other disabilities, but they also come primarily from low income homes. It is our job to create a comfortable learning environment for them.
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other related disabilities require some specialized structure in their learning environment.
Flexible seating is one way to provide different options for these students to get comfortable to increase their capacity to learn. When students' level of comfort is increased, they are able to achieve greater learning gains.
My hope is that providing flexible seating will achieve this result.
Special children require a specialized environment. Here at Dunedin Elementary School we strive to provide each learner with what they require to achieve their best possible learning gains. Some of our students learn differently and need additional environmental supports.
Flexible seating will ensure that our students are as comfortable as possible so that they can concentrate on learning.
Traditional tables and chairs are not an ideal fit for all students. Some of our learners are more likely to engage in off task or self harm behaviors when sitting in traditional seating. Other seating options such as bean bag chairs may have a calming effect on these learners.
