Seat Sacks Needed for a Class of 32 That’s Growing....
My students need seat sacks to store books, folders and pencil cases. The class is very large and needs a functional way to store items necessary for learning.
My students from New York City are primarily from poor and working class families. They come from many parts of the world and speak over 7 different languages. Despite cultural differences we work to come together as a family and give the children many opportunities to celebrate and teach others about who they are and where they come from. We encourage them to embrace their identity, their culture, and provide them with opportunities to do so.
The class is Integrated Co-Teaching with a general education teacher and a special education teacher.
There are 10 children classified with special needs and four students who are English Language Learners. Four students come from families that have been displaced from their homes and are presently living in temporary housing. The students are often paired strategically to support each others learning.
I am the the special education teacher assigned to this 4th grade class. I worked closely with this group of youngsters when they were in first grade. They are an exceptional group of children who graciously support and encourage each another. I am so looking forward to building more memories and enriching learning experiences with these beautiful young souls.
My Project
Seat sacks are an absolute necessity especially when a class has over 30 students. I want to teach the children the importance of organization but it will be difficult without providing them with a place to organize their supplies. Desks have been phased out of classrooms in my school and students now sit at tables. My class next year will be remaining in one room for all subject areas. Without seat sacks kids will have to keep backpacks next to their seats throughout the entire day to have access to books and supplies. With over 30 students in the class, this will be quite hazardous and not conducive to learning. If the class has seat sacks they would be taught to place necessary supplies into their seat sacks in an organized way for easy access. This will help the day run much more smoothly. The classroom will be tidy and not be full of backpacks on the floor, which would be easy for children and adults to trip over.
Without seat sacks I’m not sure how my students will be able to have easy access to the items they need for everyday learning.
