Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a high-poverty public school district in New Jersey. I have 20 high-energy, bilingual kindergartners. Unlike last year when we were learning virtually, being in person has been challenging and stressful. We come in every morning and follow our routines to keep each other safe and healthy. We have learned to keep our distance and to sanitize after each activity. The children have adjusted well to our new normal. We are doing our best to make it work and keep it educational and fun at the same time.
Things are obviously more challenging than previous years.
Although it is early in the year, I am looking for ways to help them organized and keep their materials neat, their cubbies orderly, and the desks uncluttered, something that is not easy achieved in kindergarten during normal times. In the past, they would have communal bins and shared materials now we need to keep everything separated.
I want to provide my kindergarten all that they need to succeed. Many of my students receive free lunch and breakfast. Because of their socioeconomic status they are not afforded the same opportunities and head start that many other children would automatically be provided.
My Project
Kindergarten is a special year in a child's life. This is the first year my students will be in the classroom. I have tried to make our classroom environment very welcoming and exciting for my students. Due to covid, our classroom setup looks a little different this year. There are some materials that are not at their reach or easily accessible for my little ones.
The Seat Sacks will be such a great addition to our classroom because the students will have everything they may need to learn at their reach!
These seat sacks from Lakeshore Learning will allow the students to keep their reading and writing booklets, guided reading books, and their library books at a close reach. They will be able to work comfortably knowing they have all of their learning tools right by them. I cannot wait for my kindergarteners to get to use their seat sacks and customize them with their name!
