Do you remember your first year of school, Kindergarten? It can be exciting at times but scary or confusing at others. My students feel the same way except they also have special needs and are in an inclusion classroom.
My students are in Kindergarten and have special needs.
Some of the students have autism or are cognitively impaired. My students are very sweet and wonderful. These students are from a low income community. They have special needs but are in a classroom with general education students and are expected to do all of the same activities. These students need a little more support than the general education students but because of their location (high poverty area), it is difficult to get the materials they need in order to be successful in a inclusion classroom.
My Project
My students have special needs but are in a classroom with general education students and are held to most of the same expectations as the other students. The seat cushions in my project are great for my students because it provides the necessary sensory input for my students with autism and is helpful for other students who have difficulty focusing as well. The visual timers are great for the students who have difficulty transitioning between activities. It will allow the student to see how much time is left in one activity and will help them finish one activity and move on to the next activity more smoothly.
Please help my kindergarten students with special needs!
The seat cushion and the visual timers may seem small but these two items could make their time in school much easier and smoother. It could even be the difference between them being able to make it in a inclusion classroom or having to move to a more restrictive environment!
