Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 27 first grade students in a high poverty public school in Arizona. The students love learning about different aspects of nature. I would like to do a thematic unit on the weather and seasons.

Outside of school my students have little chance to have hands-on science and social studies experiences. My school is unable to provide non-essential items at this time. What do I want for my students? I want them to love learning. I want them to understand that learning can come from other sources besides books. I want them to rush out out my classroom door and tell their parents what they studied in class. I want them to be excited to come to school and, the end of the unit, be able to tell me about the weather and seasons and why it is important to know about them.

For this thematic unit we need center items to supplement what we will be reading about. This unit will be approximately one month. With the requested centers, books, CD, stamps, and other weather-related items, the students will be able to correctly: identify the order of the seasons, identify types of clouds, show how to dress in each season or type of weather, and identify the water cycle.

With your help, my students will be able to take better care of themselves by dressing according to the weather and season. They will be able to do hands-on experiments that will help them understand the awesome power of nature. My students are in your hands.
