Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school offers reading lab classes for students who need additional support with literacy. Traditionally, students and teachers in reading labs were given pre-scripted curriculums to improve their reading skills. These "boxed" curriculums did not connect to the lives of our students and they were reading about topics that did not have much meaning to them. This year our department decided to move away from tradition and utilize both fiction and non-fiction texts that represent our students and help them gain a deeper understanding of their world. They deserve the experience of reading texts that have value.
It is our hope that with this refreshed approach we will build lifelong readers!
My Project
Our Special Education "Hybrid" classes in grades 5-8 will be going to the New England Aquarium for a field trip this spring. In order to prepare for our trip, we plan on reading informational text about some of the most popular animals. Each class in the 5-8th grade will be given a text set of animal books and will use them to practice literacy skills. This is a great opportunity to have students read about a topic and then see it in action on the field trip. This is also a very special opportunity for our students with special needs to participate in a literary study with a real-life connection!
