SE-YA Later, Wisconsin...We're Headed to Tennessee
Help me give my students an experience they'll never forget by helping to provide a place stay while attending the SouthEastern Young Adult Festival in Tennessee!
The students in our school’s Novel Experiences class are spending the semester building a love of books and a passion for reading. A typical day finds them being read aloud to from a common experience book, and reflecting and responding in order to hone their writing skills, and reading and discussing books of their choosing.
Beyond this, our students need experiences that create a personal connection to develop a true love of reading.
We are a fund-deficient district, deeply feeling the effects of dramatically decreased funding at the state level. Gone is money for many items that would increase student engagement and foster a true love of learning and discovery. Over 50% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, which usually means that participation in such experiences is virtually non-existent.
My Project
Meeting an author makes a book real to a student, especially those students who aren’t as connected to reading as they could be. And our students will have the chance to do just this at the Southeastern Young Adult Festival at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in March! Connecting with an author creates an emotional response that draws kids into wanting to read. We're planning a number of "book tastings" with books written by the 45 authors who'll be in attendance so that our students can have the most personal conversations possible with the authors.
Because we live more than 10 hours away from this event, we will need to stay overnight for three nights.
Your donation will help pay for two nights of lodging for 20 high school students and three teachers...and give my students an experience they will never forget!
