My students are in a moderate/severe autism spectrum classroom and we want to work on expanding our elective program. We spend a lot of time working on life skills, money, community based instruction, and accessing the community for jobs and social interactions. My students enjoy sensory stimulation in the form of swings, fidgets, music, art, and visuals. My goal for each student is to leave high school with the ability to access the community safely and work where they find purpose. My students range from 9th-12th grade and have many talents and gifts.
We are a Title I school with students who are wonderful and really try their best.
I have a lot of support from my general education co-educators and we integrate our students together. My students require sensory input throughout the day and they all enjoy arts and working outside. My students ride the bus for at least 40 minutes to come to school without complaint. They enjoy going out into the community and working at jobs like Round Table and CVS.
My Project
This year, in order to offer more electives for students in the SDC/Autism and SDC/ID classes, we have started an elective wheel. My elective class focuses on making cards for our job site at the retirement community and basic art skills in painting and scrapbooking.
This class will work on sensory needs, reaching the community, fine motor skills, and finding the love of expression through art.
As a class, we took a look at the items we need to get the year started. We do not currently have any paint, canvases, or brushes to start painting, so we are asking for items to get started. We also need more card stock to continue our card making for the retirement community and scrapbooking.
