Sculpture for competitive art portfolio! Students at the Art and Music Academy choose either an art major or music major. The art major track is designed to prepare underprivileged NYC students with similar classes as a wealthy school district in order to create a competitive art portfolio to compete for college admissions. The Art and Music Academy accepts 70 talented art majors each year. Unfortunately, The Art and Music Academy accepts more talented students than NYC DOE provides funds for materials. This is exceptionally true during the sophomore year when art majors are required to take Sculpture. As an art teacher at the Art and Music Academy, I want my tenth-grade sculpture students to have the opportunity to sculpt like real scultptors. To do this, students will need to work with plaster of paris and sculpture wire. These materials will allow students to experience making armatures. An armature is like a skeleton. Plaster of paris is a material that can be added to the wire to build a 3 dimensional free standing permanent sculpture. In additon to the lack of funds for sculpture material, The Art and Music Academy was recently forced to relocate. This resulted in administrative decisions to disassemble the kiln. A kiln is like an oven that cooks clay. So, without this oven, the sculpture class is unable to work with clay. Sculpture still remains in the curriculum because it is an important part of a competitive portfolio, but there are no materials to sculpt. In order to make 3 dimensional projects that will show well in a competitive portfolio, the students will need both sculpture wire and plaster of paris. Both of these materials are common in any sculpture studio and are used by all sculptors. Once provided with materials, sculpture students will be able to engage in the construction of professional projects. Specifically, the sculpture materials that I need for 70 students are 10 boxes of 60lbs. Plaster of Paris and 70 rolls of 16-gauge sculpture wire (1 per student). I want my students to have these materials because I am preparing these students with competitive art portfolios.
