This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are bright, energetic, funny, expressive and have a love for the arts. It is a unique challenge to teach my students, but for the right reasons. They see the world in an entirely different way and I do my best to engage them in artistic activities that teach them the principles and elements of the arts, but also how the artist can be a recorder of history, both globally and individually.
My Project
Some of my students did not have access to basic materials and couldn't fully engage in remote art class. They were frustrated and some cried, which broke my heart.
I had my students create artifacts based on whatever we could find around the house.
We turned cardboard boxes into shelving units, leaves, gravel and found materials into expressive masks and empty toilet tissue rolls into miniature houses, bracelets, and kaleidoscopes.
I purchased some art materials, but the paint sets and clay will help my students fully engage in my class.
