The students in my classroom are best described as exceptional. They exceed my expectations in everything I ask them to do. They are passionate about the dramatic arts, and they view theatre as more than a hobby; it is their safe place. My students love the acceptance they feel in our theatre troupe, and, in return, they pay it forward by spreading that love and compassion to many students in our school.

Our theatre productions provide a chance for the students to explore themselves and their values all while having fun. I find that the teens enjoy the collaborative environment that theatre provides, and they are always willing to add more "brothers" and "sisters" into their family. My school is in a low socioeconomic area, and this program provides a means of escape for these students.
My Project
My school district's theatre department is growing. More students are taking theatre classes and feeding into the after school mainstage productions. The department hosted only one Introduction to Theatre class four years ago. Now it contains 3 theatre classes that are all at capacity. The growth is very encouraging and it has caused me to start searching for resources that will help my Introduction to Theatre course students harness skills that will aid them in the advanced courses.
Script analysis incorporates the valued skill of Literacy into the drama classroom.
I am requesting class sets of scripts that my theatre students will read together in class. The scripts I have chosen are modern and of interest to the students, but they will also challenge my students to think critically when it comes to staging and designing shows. Incorporating literacy into electives is a cross-curricular standard that benefits other subjects as well. The close reading of these scripts will encourage students to not only grow as performers but also in their reading levels.
