I teach 6th through 12th grade art at a high-need urban community school. Our school is portfolio based. They have oral exit presentations accompanied with a written paper for each subject, in lieu of the New York State Regents exams. Special Education is the largest department at our school. Most of my students are a part of the Special Education program.
Our school has faced severe budget cuts. Many teachers were excessed last year and our arts department was cut in half. The art classes that we do have are in dire need of supplies. I recently took my students to a nearby non-profit after school arts organization to make them aware of arts opportunities outside of school, but is difficult for many of them to attend after school programs. While we were there, students expressed interest in screen printed t-shirts made by students. This gave me the idea of trying to find funding for screenprinting supplies for my classroom.
As far as printmaking goes, screenprinting is relatively easy and non-toxic. It is a good skill to know, and can easily be done at home for students who wish to pursue it on their own time. Many of my students have an interest in fashion and would love to be able to create their own designs. I have requested screenprinting start up kits and inks. These kits will be able to be used with multiple classes and grade levels. Only the ink will need to be replaced.
Your generosity will help my students realize their creative potential, give them a skill that they can use in the business world, and provide them with a more well-rounded arts program. Please consider donating to the arts. With all of the budget cuts facing our schools, the arts have been hit very hard. Research has shown that students who take art do better in all subject areas. Please support our project and give our students the opportunity to be creative and improve their critical thinking skills!
