Screen Printing for Change

My students need screen printing supplies: screens, screen printing ink, and squeegees in order to exhibit their art in the community using a "real world" application.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My art room is not a classroom at all. I would describe my art room as a studio, a workroom, a gallery, or (my favorite) an art laboratory. I teach a series of art courses starting with Fundamentals of Art and eventually moving into Advanced Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, and Design.

My students are very special.

Most of them have grown up in an urban environment and attended city schools. Many of them have had poor experiences in previous schools. Our school is an arts integrated, project-based charter high school. Any student in the city may apply for the lottery to gain acceptance to our charter school. There is no minimal GPA requirement nor any other stipulation. Our motto is "Known. Loved. Inspired." I truly feel we live up to this promise to students. They feel safe at our school and at home. For many of them, for the first time, they feel appreciated at school and cared for by their teachers. Due to the fact we are arts integrated and project based, many of our students dream of pursuing careers in the arts.

My Project

Recently our city experienced great trauma. Our school has been working hard to ensure students develop their own voice and stay connected to the community. In our art room students developed and printed t-shirts and posters used for rallies and protests. We used simple screen printing techniques students would be able to replicate in their own home. My goal for this donors choose project is to give students the ability to learn art techniques with real world applications, by creating their own screen printing production space to benefit the school and the community. I would love students to, not only be given a voice, but also a vehicle for their artwork.

I believe that by donating to this project my students will be given the opportunity to learn sophisticated techniques that have the potential to spark interests in careers and community involvement.
