I teach five sections of seventh grade social studies at Lawson Middle School. It is a new site. We were given a brand new overhead projector but were left with old screens that are very small. I use a supplementary program that includes transparencies of geographic locations, cultural art, people, and places. Many of these transparencies are used for backdrops to plays that the students put on to teach each other about various topics. For example, during the study of the Middle Ages in Europe, the students are given first hand accounts of topics such as peasants, justice, lords and nobles, economy etc. They divide into groups and put on plays so that the class can learn about these topics in an exciting way. The students take notes on the plays and then take a quiz to make sure they have gotten the information. Every year, students say that these assignments are some of the most fun. One of the favorites is the Kabuki drama where the students learn about the process and then put on one of their own. All of these require the use of a large screen that is big enough to go to the floor so that the transparencies can be used as back drops for the plays. It would be great to have a screen so that the children could experience these like they were designed.
