My Students
I work on a large campus with two main buildings. The primary building houses 600 students, grades K - 6. The intermediate building has 400 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. We are a Title I school with a large population of English Language Learners. Many of my kids come from challenging home lives and struggle with personal and academic issues; so many of them don't have the simplest art materials at home like crayons, scissors, markers, etc.
Recent changes in public education have resulted in many hours of testing for grades K-6.
I consider it a great privilege to be able to provide my students with the opportunity to experiment with unique, quality art materials and learn to use them to express themselves and break up their day with some artistic creativity. I love it when they tell me they are asking for paints and art supplies for birthdays, etc. I know they've discovered the artist within themselves, and it gives them joy.
My Project
I would love for my students to get some more experience with the art form of scratchboard. It is a very unique type of art and they are mesmerized by it, I must say. A year ago we got some new scratchboards, but our tools were hand me downs from another school and are breaking apart. I'd like to replace them, fortify our scratchboard supply and use this beautiful, exciting project to keep the interest of my older artists as the school year wanes.
Who doesn't love to paint?
I know I do. t's the favorite of every grade level in art class, and we all paint and often! I find that the watercolor refills are the most economic way to replenish popular colors. Also, I like to give limited colors to my younger artists to help insure success. Liquid watercolor is a great product to create watercolor washes of any intensity. Of course, we can not have enough paintbrushes with 1000 artists at my school. The ones listed are a great brand and we will use the finer points often for details in so many of our paintings. Good, quality watercolor paper is a MUST for painting and I love the Strathmore pads. The fourth and fifth grades paint an Egyptian sarcophagus and fifth grade paints beautiful birch trees. I cut the paper in half for a variety of projects in other grades.
As the school year goes on into spring, many of my older students get a bit of 'spring fever'. I believe unique projects like the scratchboard and various painting pieces will maintain their interest and enthusiasm in art class. Littler artists are always enthusiastic, so it will be wonderful to have all the paint we need to finish up this school year.
