Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I glad to be in your class!" exclaims some third graders as they enter the room. "Because you make learning fun and interesting. This is not so hard," they continued. That describes the dynamic in my classroom, full of energy and excitement as the students anticipate a new activity.
I teach in an urban elementary school, third or fourth grade all subjects. The school is located in a low socio-economic area. Purchasing books to read is to expensive for parents and budget cuts have put a limit on the number of books the school librarian can order when multiple copies are needed.
The children love books especially new ones from our library but cannot fully enjoy them. Reading is difficult because words are hard to decode or vocabulary is so unfamiliar that reading is no fun. I have discovered that the students like chapter books want to read more of them. It gives them a sense of growth and maturing in their reading. But how do I encourage them to continue reading when they struggle with vocabulary and phonics? Scrabble to Read.
Scrabble to Read project will need class sets of chapter books chosen for the reading level of the students. The scrabble game, use with small groups, will enhance phonics and spelling skills which students can apply while reading. During reading students will make their list of vocabulary words that they want to learn, then recreate those words as they play scrabble focusing on blends, clusters, vowels and syllables. This project will also foster working together, sharing, increase reading comprehension and most of all make reading and learning vocabulary fun.
Your support with this project is important because it puts a book in the hands of each child in my class. They will be excited to know they do not have to share. They will also look forward to the game center because more than one group can participate at the same time- how about the whole class!
