As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in the classroom and beyond. My students are determined to do their best and consistently surprise me.
My students are kind, creative thinkers with a passion for learning.
My students love positive attention and the opportunity to be creative. Our school provides 100% free lunch and breakfast to our students due to their socioeconomic background. Many of my students will be deprived of opportunities afforded to their middle-class peers, however, this is not to say they can't succeed in life. I know that the only thing I can control is the experience they have in my classroom. I am hopeful that I may be able to inspire my students to continue to pursue academic success.
As we learn about American history and the history of our state, it is easy for students to lose interest. One of the best ways to combat this monotony is to make learning more hands on. What better way than to get kids talking and on their feet!
I want to create an interactive experience as we begin our Native American units.
The project would involve creating 'character cards' using the laminator and colored cardstock. Students will then interact with one another based on the information on the card. They will need to work together in order to solve historical mysteries.
With these supplies, I will be able to create a series of projects which I will tailor to our units. Investing in this for my classroom will allow me to create an endless amount of historical projects!
