Help me give my students a therapeutic sensory room that will provide them with personalized sensory input. Our items will help them develop greater proprioception and interoception skills, and learn to self-regulate in a calmly lit environment.
Our school is a diverse population of approximately 470 students, with multiple ethnic and developmental backgrounds. 100% of our students are enrolled in a free-and-reduced lunch program. I work in a classroom with students who experience varying degrees of special needs. We are dedicated to creating a joyful culture for learning and personalizing instruction to meet every student's needs.
Our school nurtures an environment of inclusion, encouraging participation of students of all level of abilities in our programming.
I am always seeking new ways to engage our students in a multisensory learning environment to meet our students' needs.
My Project
Our sensory room will be a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment that provides students with personalized sensory input. This helps children calm and refocus themselves so that they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others. When provided adequate space and correct equipment, students leave the sensory room better able to cope with day-to-day stressors that negatively affect learning.
A sensory room will enhance students' self-regulatory skills and will address the needs of students with multimodal learning styles.
It will be available for all students at our school. It will teach students how to regulate their emotions, develop and nurture motor skills, and encourage greater attention so they are better prepared for the academic school day.
