What makes my students special is they have to work so hard to get caught up. They come from an under-served community where a school was not available to them for many years. My students have had big changes to deal with in their way of life and they work hard every day to overcome.
My students are so respectful and kind.
They care so much about others and love to do what they can to make where they live a better place to be. They are getting an education to help their entire family!
My Project
As students come in each morning, if they read the previous night, they can add one jelly bean to the jar. As they begin to fill their jar, they will receive different prizes. One of those being a chance to choose their own book to foster more reading and ownership at home. I have chosen books of high interest to my students; such as "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "Harry Potter" as well as a large variety of different books. My goal is to get them prizes they are excited about and to be able to have a visual, while being accountable for reading every night. The jar will be labeled with different levels that once students reach that level, they will be able to get a prize. The prizes will range from candy, free time, doughnuts, and ultimately a book that they can choose. They work so hard already, but they are behind. I believe that a real life incentive will close the gap and make students want to read!
