Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching 7th grade English Language Arts in an urban district for over 10 years and each year my population has changed. This year coming year I will be teaching four general education classes. Our school has moved from an 88 min block schedules to a 65 min block. That means I will be teaching more students next year.
Many of my students live in poverty and are faced with violence on a daily basis.
I can promise that each student who enters my room is given many opportunities to learn and grow throughout the year. I strive to make my classroom a safe haven for my students and a home away from home!
My Project
New Jersey Department of Education has transitioned away from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and moved on to New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA). Regardless of the name the skills are still the same and SCOPE is the perfect tool to explore those skills.
My students have a wide range of learning styles and reading levels and Scholastic Scope magazine appeals to all of them.
It offers my students a variety of stories to choose from at levels that accommodate their needs! Even the most reluctant readers find something interesting inside. It allows them to go from current stories in the world to fun-filled stories from various genres in one issue. Last year Scope was integral in how I taught summary writing. The online worksheets and tools helped me train my students how to write a clear concise summary.
