Too many people think that inner-city public schools are filled with “those” kids... troublesome students with poor test scores. It’s a shame that not everyone has the privilege of working a job like mine, in a school like mine, and with kids like mine because if given that chance, they would certainly shake their cynicism. If an inner-city public school is teeming with anything, then it teems with unshakable talent, resilience, and perseverance.
I refer to my students as "my kids." Despite the various challenges my kids face within the learning and home environment, they show up with their game faces on and are eager to learn.
Together, we create a culture of learning in which reading becomes interesting and writing seems a little less scary.
My Project
Despite the fact that Scope Magazines enhance the reading experience for my kids in numerous ways, we simply have not had the extra funding available to purchase them for the past two years. That's precisely why we need your help!
Nonfiction can be hard to sell to students, but these magazines have interesting texts that make nonfiction engaging and fun.
Furthermore, the magazines include plays and my kids love volunteering for reading roles. Even those who shy away from reading aloud are eager to get involved in the reading experience when we delve into the drama these magazines include.
A Scope subscription also gives me access to the Scholastic website, which offers a plethora of resources regarding the magazines' texts. Introductory videos, worksheets, lesson plans, and ideas for extension activities to use for the students have served as successful enrichment in the past.
