My Students

Nyob zoo! Hola! હેલો ! 你好! สวัสดี! xin chào! Hello! Our classroom is a melting pot of language and culture. In addition to the challenges of school, my students also have the added challenge of having English as their second language. They are immersed in one world at home and a completely different world at school. As young teens they have to balance the tradition and expectations of each culture. They have an amazing sense of family responsibility that is seen in and out of the classroom. Our future is in good hands with these kids!

They are incredibly hardworking students, but finding the right tools and strategies that work from them poses a challenge in a standards based educational world.

Not only are they working to learn English, but on top they are diving into the depths of Academic English. They do not have the same resources or support at home as others, and the parents greatly rely on the school system to educate their child. Their uniqueness adds so much to the school diversity!

My Project

A large portion of my classroom population consists of students who receive free or reduced services and are considered at-risk. These students have challenging lives and on top of that trying to learning English.

Middle school is a tough age, they are not little kids and not quite teenagers-It is very difficult to find age appropriate texts that are also meet their language development needs.

I need access to materials that are advanced enough for their age but also appropriate for their learning needs. I have used Scholastic Scope Magazine in previous years and it was proved to be an exceptional resource for my students.
