My students are coming to me on grade level reading. They love reading. I want to be able to nurture their love of reading by providing a variety of different texts. Different texts allow for them to begin to build background knowledge. Background knowledge makes it possible for them to do extremely well on state and national standardized test. As an IB school, I am expected to find a platform that will allow my students to view the world through global lens. I have been fortunate enough to come across a wonderful resource.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 90% of our students receiving free lunch.
Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our area. Students speak a multitude of languages including English and Spanish. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. My job is to find interesting text that will allow them to understand not only their cultural but other cultures around the world.
My students will use Scope Magazine to work on the following reading comprehension strategies: Asking Questions, Visualizing, Making Connections, Determining Important Information, Making Inferences, Making Connections and using our school-wide reading strategy- Before- During- After.
Students will be able to practice those skills using the Scope Magazine.
Most importantly, they will have a variety of interesting topics/subject matter that they will be introduced to. I can already imagine the characters they will meet or the play they will get to act out as a class.
As an IB school what a great way to understand what is happening not only in our own communities but what is happening in the world. Scope Magazine will instantly give my classroom a global focus.
