Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students from our Title I school in the heart of the Rocky Mountains come from diverse backgrounds. Most struggle with social, economic and academic challenges.
PE can be the most entertaining and physically active half hour of the week.
Over 500 students attend twenty-three PE classes. A successful PE activity leaves everyone out of breath, smiling and never knowing they just improved their coordination, agility, and overall fitness. PE also has the power to transport children to a world of play that improves social skills, team building and sportsmanship.
My Project
It can be hard to motivate students to exercise until they are red in the face and out of breath. However, that all changes when a student sits on a scooter. Before they know it, they are begging to do the scooter activity again and again and again.
The board scooters will be used in a rotating PE station called the sleigh ride.
In the sleigh ride, students use a pool noodle and a scooter to pull each other around the perimeter of the gym. It teaches team work, spatial awareness and leaves students out of breath, red in the face and grinning from ear to ear. Most importantly, the scooter boards and PlasmaCar have non-marring wheels to prevent scratches on the gym floor.
Also included in this project are light-weight, over-sized volleyballs which will be perfect for teaching elementary students volleyball skills. Hockey balls will be used in a hockey game called Eggs in a Basket. A portable badminton net will replace a broken one.
