The students in my central Illinois classroom are three, four, and five years old.
Our little learners are eager and enthusiastic about coming to school to learn through play.
All have been identified as "at-risk" through a developmental screening. They each have a need in one or more of the following areas: language, cognitive, motor, and/or social skills. Many of my students come from low-income households and live in an urban setting with few opportunities to experience nature. For most, this is their first school experience. Many have limited access to educational books and activities at home, and a few are English Language Learners.
My Project
My students LOVE learning at our sensory table. They also need to work on fine motor skills, letter knowledge, and color sorting. These fun tools will be the perfect way to integrate letter identification, scissor skills, and color sorting at the sensory table.
Children will learn about letters as they "cook" alphabet soup.
With four sets of this fun game, four children will be able to "cook" at the same time. They can sort the letters, find letters that are the same, and even find the letters to spell their name. Using the handy scoops, children will pick up the water beads and sort them by color into the ice cube trays, which are six different colors. Children will use the same grasp needed for scissor use as they manipulate the handy scoops. What a fun way to practice literacy, sorting, and fine motor skills!
