Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All children need basic supplies in order to be successful in their education. This is especially true during art, a time when each student has the opportunity to be creative and think outside the box. I teach art to all the students in grades 1 through 8, which is approximately 900 students every week! Most students are below the poverty line and their parents have difficulty providing basic supplies for their child.
The problem is that most of my students do not have the basic tools they need to adequately participate with hands on art activities. They lack basic materials such as scissors and glue. In order to develop their creative side, students need art. They do not require expensive supplies to enhance creativity, but scissors and glue they do need. Please help that student who sits and waits for someone else to lend them scissors and glue because his/her parent can't afford it.
What these students need is to each have access to a pair of scissors and a stick of glue during their art period. These items would be held by the art teacher, distributed for each project and collected at the end of class for the next period. Consequently, the materials would be utilized by all 900 students in grades 1-8. Having these items will allow every student to use the entire class period to actively work on a hands-on project.
By supplying these materials you will make it possible for every student to actively participate in the creation of many works of art every year. You will help that child from feeling embarrassed that his/her parents didn't purchase their supplies. You will allow every student, regardless of their income level, a sense of equality.
