Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a 4th grade public school teacher at Guadalupe Elementary School. My students have Science lessons twice a week for 120 minutes. I've been in a Science teaching program, dedicating over 44 hours this year of my own free time plus a week before school in August and a week after school to take classes on teaching science. Our school is located in the Crocker Amazon neighborhood near the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Most students are learning English as a Second Language with Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog or Samoan being spoken in the home. My students and their families are very hard workers. Many of my students' parents hold two and three jobs. In fourth grade we do an in-depth introduction and exploration into rocks and minerals as well as studying soda pop terrariums to understand the biomes and the food chain. Hand lenses aid these budding geologists and environmental scientists in further understanding what they are looking at. They love the hand lenses. I only have six -one for each table of students. They're falling apart and getting scratched up. I am requesting 33 hand lenses (one for each student) to use for hours of science and independent exploration in class, as well as an additional 33 to send home with the kids to use on their own. You should see the specimens they already bring in from their at-home investigations. I'm also requesting pill bugs and earthworms as we're in the city and these aren't always easy to locate on our own in the garden. This is part of their investigation unit. It would be great for them to see how these creatures belong in a biome in a soda pop bottle with soil. Thanks for reading and considering my proposal.
