Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 6th and 7th grade students are amazing scientists who love exploring STEM concepts. Their enthusiasm for hands-on activities and curiosity about the world around them is boundless. They are a diverse student population from highly gifted, English language learners, and students with special needs.
Witnessing my students asking questions, researching independently, and communicating their conclusions with one another bring me a tremendous amount of satisfaction.
Providing my students with appropriate equipment would greatly enhance their academic experience and help foster their love of learning.
My Project
My 6th grade classes will soon be starting our plants and animal cell unit. We will be using our newly funded microscopes to further improve the quality of hands-on learning with STEM activities. It is necessary to have the proper tools and equipment to have a meaningful hands-on experience in the lab. We will need AA batteries for our microscopes, forceps to help us place specimens on our slides, and plant and animal prepared slides to compare to the ones my students prepared themselves.
For most of my students, this will be their first time handling microscopes, using pipettes, and preparing slides.
Students will see first hand parts of plants and animal cell organelles and compare them to their textbook diagrams and photographs. It will enhance understanding the concepts of mitosis and cellular respiration. It will make abstract concepts concrete.
Seeing an actual specimen first hand such as an onion cell or a cross section of a plant stem will create more student enthusiasm and interest than just reading about them.
Once students have made a connection to a concrete world, it will make it easier for them to relate their understanding of the concepts both orally and in writing.
