My students need flexible seating that would give them the tools and freedom to explore science in ways that allow them to think from a different perspective.
My students are inquisitive, engaging, charismatic and they love to explore the world of science! 85 3rd grade students benefit from over 60 minutes of hands-on science investigative per day in my very supportive neighborhood school on Chicago's northwest side.
I am a passionate educator and my science students are amazing!
The Next Generation Science Standards are paving the way for my students to go beyond "Reading to Learn!" Students use technology to read articles, charts, climographs and analyze and interpret data. They are making scientific claims and defending them, planning and conducting investigations, and defining and solving problems using technology through innovative, hands-on lessons.
As their teacher and advocate, I understand that every child learns differently so it is my aim to create a flexible and open learning space for my kids where they will have the best learning environment possible with plenty of room to explore.
My Project
I teach science to 85 3rd Graders each day. My students would benefit from flexible seating that would give them choice and space to explore science in ways that allow them to think from a different perspective. Stools, portable lap desks and floor pillows are tools that will allow my students the freedom to investigate my Next Generation Science lessons with extra space for creativity to problem solve, read, analyze and interpret data through on-going investigations in my hands-on science classroom.
Traditional desks are always an option, but the donations for this project will greatly improve my classroom instruction!
This flexibility will allow the students to be more engaged in technology and have the confidence to be in control of their own learning throughout my classroom.
I have seen the benefits of using flexible seating in other classrooms, and I believe that my project will make a difference because it will help to promote independence, hands-on learning and will reflect the learning styles of each of my 3rd grade students with the opportunity to choose their seating options.
