Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have such a talented and hard-working group of 6th graders! I strive to push them to be the best scientists they can be and go above and beyond in everything they do. Every day they are eager to learn something new in class and make an effort to let me know that I push them every day to be their best- even if at times it is difficult.
I have a high percentage of ELL students in my classes, so visuals are extremely important!
I try my very best to give all my students visuals and definitions through anchor charts, visuals, video and just being silly to apply the science we learn in the classroom to real life. In addition, my students have limited access to resources such as yard sticks, calculators and the most basic resources because we are not a 1:1 school.
It is important to me to have an engaging classroom environment that is both warm and inviting to ALL students. It is crucial that my students feel confident in my classroom so that they yearn to take leaps in their education and success at YES!
My Project
Currently, my students do not have efficient calculators to work on specific science TEKS. The majority of the calculators provided by the school are broken or prioritized to the math teachers.
I want my students to be able to solve extensive science problems using a 4 function calculator and focusing on the applied science, not the math.
Sure, they can solve science problems using basic long division skills however sometimes the problems can be more complex and I would like to give challenging problems that focus on the applied science and critical thinking rather than making sure to long divide correctly. With a calculator I am able to push them to more advanced problems that require the use of a calculator for efficient completion.
