Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade students are enthusiastically engaged with our scientific investigations. Being able to record and document our activities increases their engagement and allows for extensive writing opportunities describing their scientific learning.
My fourth grade students attend a school that serves a low-income community in California.
We are a Title 1 school that has worked hard to raise the academic achievement of our students each year. A majority of the students are English Language learners and come from homes that predominately speak Spanish. They are very engaged and interested in learning about science. We have a worm bin, walking sticks, and beetles in our classroom. We have studied adaptations of bird beaks and how the earth slowly and rapidly changes. We are right now beginning to study magnetism and electricity and will do many investigations studying different kinds of electrical circuits.
My Project
With a digital camera in the classroom, the students will be able to document the various steps of a scientific investigation. Being able to record with a picture allows the students to review the material. For example, they will be able to take a picture of their first simple circuit that they created. With a picture in hand, they will be able to write all the steps that were taken to construct a simple electrical circuit. Student pictures increase student engagement considerably and help students to take ownership and cultivate meaning in their learning. It also increases the fun as students tend to like seeing themselves and each other in pictures. A scientific photo album will be created of all of our scientific investigations. Student writing about the investigations will be included. Students will be able to read our photo album which will help them review and remember what they have learned throughout the year.
Scientists at work will receive a great boost of energy from your generous support for a digital camera for our classroom.
My students will greatly appreciate the fun and joy that will come from using a digital camera in the classroom.
