I have the privilege of teaching science to a culturally diverse group of students. We have students from Greece, Albania, Canada, Ireland, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico, China, Japan just to name a few. Some of them have recently arrived and are just learning our customs and language, while others have been here for a while. The one thing all of these kids have in common is their willingness and eagerness to learn.
These students learn science through many experiential learning activities.
Throughout the school year, my students become zoo keepers, cartographers, herpetologists, aerodynamic engineers, mathematicians, and even agriculturists. I am always trying to engage every one of my students, regardless of their learning abilities, with new technology and manipulatives that will enhance their learning. It is because of this that I am becoming a member of Donorschoose.org. I want to expand my students' exposure to new and exciting ventures available out there. Thank you for reading and I hope together we can instill in our students the joy of learning.
My Project
As the school's science teacher, I teach students with diverse learning abilities. I service students in regular classrooms, inclusion classrooms, and our strand (autistic) classrooms. Having a diverse way to reach my students is a most. Some students learn by seeing, others by doing and some by using every single one of their senses at the same time. Because of this, I like to modify and accommodate my lessons to the students' needs. I do this by creating a variety of activities, experiments and incorporating diverse technology into my lessons. This year I am using an apple tv, InFocus in conjunction with a laptop. With this new technology, I am able to wirelessly project my lessons on a screen for all of my students to see. In this way, the students can hear the lesson and see the key points I am teaching on the screen. This technique facilitates my students learning because they can see the key points being discussed in written form (which I prepare prior to the lesson, and then add notes as I am teaching) and hear the discussion taking place at the same time. This new technology has enhanced my students' learning, and now I want to do more. I want all of my students to participate in my classes, even my non-verbal students. Through the use of an iPad, even my nonverbal students can communicate and actively participate in the lessons. With the use of an iPad, Apple TV, and InFocus, the students would not only be able to communicate, participate and collaborate in the lessons with all students simultaneously. With the use of an iPad, I would be able to create, individualize and reach my students in many, many different ways.
