Scientific Literacy

My students need help with literacy and need informational texts to read on a regular basis. I have used magazines in my classroom before, and they provide a way for them to get more texts.

My Students

We are a rural school located in Alabama. My students are in seventh and eighth grade life science and physical science and participate in project based learning. My students are a diverse group of students from various backgrounds. Over half of our students are from low income households. My students are very hard workers, but several of my students have difficulty with reading comprehension. My students enjoy science even more when they are able to relate it to their daily lives.

My Project

My students use the articles to read and learn how to interpret and analyze science related topics. These Science World magazines are an easy way to integrate literacy in science on a daily basis. Students like articles they can relate to that enhance their understanding of science topics. The articles help students make inferences about science. The articles are easy to read and most articles can be used in differential instruction. Students will use these everyday as an activity to introduce different science topics at the beginning of each class. Students enjoyed reading and writing about several articles from the magazines this year.
