Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each morning our students arrive at school, ready for a long day. They are required to leave the security of home and family and face the world. Living in a city plagued by poverty and violence, they seek to find their identity.
The stakes are high, and their parents and teachers want the world for them.
Who are these students? They are citizens living in one of America's poorest and most dangerous cities. For many of them, school is the safe haven. The classroom they enter has starfish and seahorses, rocks and magnets, wasps nests and ostrich eggs. Their home life experiences are limited. They won't be traveling. Disney is a dream, and pictures are taken on a phone and left unprinted. Who are my students? They are my blessings and the future.
My Project
I envision my students developing research skills by using this computer to investigate different areas of study such as rocks, clothing, trees, flowers, and eggs. If they suggest that a dog or snake hatches from an egg, I will encourage them to find evidence to support their opinions. The computer will be instrumental in providing videos and pictures that enable them to investigate. Next, they will report back to their peers the information they have gathered. Yes, they will learn facts, but more importantly, they will acquire the skills that will enable them to be lifelong learners and researchers. They will learn that they may not know all the answers. However, the answers are out there, and they know how to locate them. They are living in the twenty-first century. They need the tools to be successful.
