I teach in a low-income middle school. Every student in our school receives free breakfast and lunch. Our 8th graders have the opportunity to take Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, or Geometry. Parents of students in our building struggle to provide schools supplies of any kind. Even those parents who are able to purchase supplies at the beginning of the year are unable to provide more when their student runs out.
Specialty supplies for specific subjects are a low priority as they are not used on a regular basis.
Our neighborhood does not contain very many places to purchase special supplies. Many of our families do not have reliable transportation. We also have many parents who work multiple jobs and are unable to take advantage of store hours.
My Project
The Oklahoma state test allows 8th graders to use Scientific Calculators for the Math and Science tests. The TI-30XS Multiview is the calculator that is available on the online test. In order for my students to adequately prepared, they will need to practice with the exact calculator they will use during the test. This will help them practice the buttons specific to the TI-30XS Multiview.
Since calculators sometimes have different buttons for each function, students need to practice with the buttons they are going to use.
If they do not practice with the exact buttons, they will waste time and energy trying to figure them out during the test. Having these calculators will ensure that the students are comfortable with the buttons and can focus on the actual skills they are using.
