Help me give my students the ability to be successful in higher level math. Help me give my students who are below grade level the scaffolding they need to learn grade level material. We need calculators.
Students come to my math class at varying levels of understanding. I have some 6th graders who are multiple grade levels above in math, and some 8th graders who are multiple grade levels below. I have some 7th graders who are excelling in Algebra as well as 8th graders ready for Geometry.
I find that my students love to use technology at any opportunity they can get.
In this new world, that is a great thing to learn, however, the temptation of opening email, browsers or apps on their personal devices becomes too tempting when a simple calculator is all they need. Also, when it comes to state or standardized testing, knowing how to use a calculator is an important skill to learn, as phones are not permitted during those tests.
My Project
These calculators will help scaffold the grade level curriculum for my below grade level students, as well as unlock new mathematical concepts for my grade level and advanced students.
Let's be honest... solving linear and quadratic systems are hard enough, but when students struggle with figuring out "7 minus negative 3" the remaining 99% of the problem is very difficult to understand.
These calculators will help provide my students with the ability to not stress too much on the calculations, and instead focus on the steps to the process.
For my grade level and advanced students, the ability to teach them about Sin/Cos/Tan, the Order of Operations as well as exponent and square root properties is priceless.
Also, many of my students rely on their phones for calculators, unfortunately, when it comes to state testing they are unable to use them due to safety and security purposes. By giving them the opportunity to work with these calculators from day one, it will hopefully instill a level of confidence when it comes to showing their mathematical abilities
