It's hard to see what someone is doing during an experiment when you're crowded around desks and other students. With a document camera, my students will be able to watch and experience science as it happens from anywhere in the classroom. No more - "I can't SEE" or "What's happening".
My students are very energetic and thoughtful First graders.
They come from very hands-on parents to working full time parents. They come to school ready to "play" and experience the joys of learning. As First graders, we learn from doing and asking questions. Some of us can read, while others are still learning. My students want to be "in the action" of things but can't always see what's happening as it occurs.
My Project
If our class had access to a document camera (ELMO), I would be able display our science experiments step by step up onto the wall so my WHOLE class could watch, and then they would be able to mimic the step at their desk. I wouldn't have to worry about whether or not someone missed the important reaction during our experiment.
I could set a live specimen like a beetle onto the document camera and everyone would be able to see what a beetle looked like and how it moved without the worry of another student blocking their view. I could blow up the image to increase the details such as patterns, color, and body structure of different animals or insects, and so much more.
School won't just be seen and thought of as reading, writing and math, but more of hypothesizing, planning, experimenting, and showing how our thoughts can come ALIVE.
Let's put our skills of reading, writing and counting "UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL" everyday with SCIENCE.
