My Students

My students come from a high poverty area with the majority of the school receiving free and reduced lunch. Students come to us reading 1 to 2 years below their current grade level. We have a very high percentage of English Language Learners.

I am a science teacher but, like all of our teachers, I must address the reading gap daily.

My students want to be successful in school and I want to do everything I can to help them.

My Project

Science World classroom magazine will help my students to learn about current issues in science on the reading level with which they are comfortable in a fun format.

As students study the latest scientific information in this periodical they are working on their reading skills as well as their science academic content.

My students have a lack of extra-curricular reading materials available in their homes. The magazine can help to model keeping up with news and information in a written format on a weekly basis. I expect this to change the way my students approach scientific information in their lives.
