My students need science materials, such as games, tubes and magnetic wands, that will let them experience the butterfly and plant life cycles, magnetism, heat sensors, viscosity, waves, habitats and more!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The current science curriculum that has been adopted by my district is rather dry. Young children find science to be truly magical. I want to balance teaching science with keeping the wonder alive and adding a sense of mystery to what we do in science class.
My students love to be magicians.
Earlier this year we were studying how to make secondary colors. At parent teacher conferences I asked the children to tell their parents what we had been learning in science. They were all able to describe the process well and with flourish proclaim themselves to be magicians. It was wonderful. They want to have more opportunities to create magic! Most of my students come from a background of being economically disadvantaged. Going to Discovery World is not an option for most of my student's families. School is the place where many of my students will experience the larger world.
My Project
The resources that I am requesting will expand my students sense of wonder. These supplies will give me the opportunity to let the children experience on a small scale such things as making waves, fountains, tornadoes, and secondary colors. My students will get to have multiple experiences with magnetism, viscosity, heat sensors, and the life cycle of vegetables and butterflies.
In order to fall in love with science the children need materials that they can hold in their hands and manipulate. They need to use their senses to experience the process in order to learn it well.
Children learn by experiencing the world around them.
Young children are like sponges ready to absorb all the information that is given to them. If it is juicy information they will absorb it quickly. If it dry and uninspired the absorption rate is next to nil. These resources are materials that the children will want to return to again and again. The materials that I have requested will provide long lasting, process orientated lessons, that will be highly engaging for my students.
