This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My twenty-seven second grade students are all identified as coming from low-socio-economic backgrounds. 11% are identified as homeless and 95% are identified as English Language Learners. Many of my students are unfamiliar with the world outside of where they live, due to financial strains on their family.

Although there are many barriers my students must overcome, they are very eager and excited to learn and explore the world around them.

I want to enhance their excitement through the world of learning and exploration.

My Project

The LEGO Simple Machines will benefit my students in incorporating the Next Generation Science Standards. They will have access to a LEGO curriculum that teaches them about gears, wheels and axles, levers, and pulleys. The students will benefit from the hands-on learning through the investigation process. The skills learned with the materials will also introduce them to how machines work in every day life. Students will be able to be to build success in the engineering and design process as well. They will gain knowledge on how to ask, plan, brainstorm, create, and improve designs. All these are benefits in building 21st century skills.
