The cost of hands-on science materials such as a tadpole tank and pond set, a live habitat, insect and spider videotape, silkworm eggs, lifecycles poster, giant inflatable insects and more is $700, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Our goal is to use hands-on developmentally appropriate activities to promote and reinforce scientific exploration, language and literacy skills, and mathematical thinking through early childhood science workshops.
Once the materials are delivered, three preschool teachers at our site will plan and organize a science event. We will choose the investigations, field test the investigations, compile a list of supplies, order materials and create a program describing all of the science activities.
Throughout the year our scientific explorations have been Living things around us and the environment.
To date, we have covered trees, pumpkins, squirrels, winter, and symmetry. Through our donor's generosity we hope to add on snails, ants, snails, and butterflies. I'm really excited and know that the children will enjoy watching and recording the life cycle of each species.
Science begins in prekindergarten and the resources necessary need to be hands - on. Just think of how much excitement and learning will go on when the butterflies emerge and the ladybugs molt into a pupa. Preschoolers + Science = An enriched environment that will prepare them for kindergarten.
