This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a third grade teacher at a Title I school and my students have the ability to think like scientists.
The science block can be an exciting time for the students in my class. They like to get their small fingers engaged in our third grade science activities. Unfortunately, there is lots of theory and a lack of hands-on engagement because of our limited science tools, equipment and other science materials. Theory and paperwork can be very boring to students; more importantly, it can stifle their ability to think critically because they don't have the experiences to visualize concepts and ideas. Unfortunately, our school does not have a science room, science area, science lab or a science lead person. We have a science curriculum and teachers do the best they can. This is not empowering children to be successful scientists.
As a caring instructor, my desire is to provide the experiences needed for my students to become high achievers. My students know that science "rules" in sports, academia, medicine, farming, technology, space, entertainment, security, and in everything that touches our lives. My students know that everyone should understand basic science concepts. My students need items such as: thermometers, prepared slides, and a scientific classification center to connect them to world of science.
I am seeking your generosity in helping students experience science. With your kindness, the science experiments and activities will propel these students to higher levels of scientific understanding.
