Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My 20 students are enrolled in a project-based class/club that aims to educate students about sUASs and autonomy. The two students submitting this request, Kaitlyn and Kishi, are the club president and vice president whose task is to raise funding for things we need in the class and to run our meetings. Kaitlyn is a very enterprising junior who even has her own successful cupcake business and I feel is destined to become one of community leaders. Kishi, also a junior, is enrolled in multiple rigorous classes including AP Physics. Both are part of the Air Force ROTC program at Lancaster High School.

Other students from the class are in task-related groups like Flight Ops, Media, Simulations, and Research. They range from freshman to senior grade levels and there is an even 50-50 split boys and girls. Go girls!! We live in Lancaster, California, which is sometimes called Aerospace Valley due to the proximity of SpaceX, Edwards AFB, Lockheed Martin, and Northrup Grumman. All my students are very interested in technology!

The skills my students will develop during this project, such as enhanced videography skills with the microphone and hands-on skills with the tool kits, will help them to experience more real life and career based occurrences through their classroom assignments. Another useful skill that my students will gain is the skill of safety training.By using Lipo bags, they can ensure that the Lipo batteries don't explode, catch fire, and ultimately make sure they don't cause harm and damage.

In Their Own Words

The goal we are trying to accomplish with this project is to give us the equipment needed that can support our STEM based classroom. By having access to these supplies, all of our sub teams can enhance skills in their respective areas. The ultimate goal is for us as students to grow in our equipment and capability.

I would make the most of the leadership opportunity by guaranteeing that those in sub teams have anything that will help them accomplish their team goals. Also, I would make sure that everyone knows how to use the new equipment and be sure that it is efficient and fits their needs.

Our school is ranked #18 out of 512 schools in the Los Angeles County as most diverse in academics, extracurricular activities, college prep programs, and more. Therefore, this project is important to me and my school because it allows for further development in our LAMPE program. This class focuses on sUAS (small unmanned aerial systems), and with these items, us students can further our research and use of these in hopes of one day using them for real life problems such as an on-campus intrusion.
