My students are very creative. However they don't get a lot of opportunities to express that creativity. They need the chance to show that, even though we are a little school, they can shine like the stars they are. I am a strong believer in PBL (Project Based Learning) activities. I love giving my students something to do rather than just pages out of a book to read.
Whether it is building a model of a dam, or editing a video production, my students learn more when they are doing hands on projects.
It gives them a sense of ownership and pride to show what they have accomplished. Even though, being Middle School students, they tend to duck their head and pretend they don't care, I can feel the sense of pride they have when they are showing their projects to someone new.
My Project
I love teaching my students how to make video projects. We have used green screen apps to make movies with special effects, camera apps to take pictures, music apps to create soundtracks, and movie apps to edit everything together. But as everything advances, some of the technology gets left behind. There are so many new ways to create video projects that it is mind-blowing.
We use Apple iPads in Science and Social Studies to create our video projects.
But the few we have are becoming out of date. They cannot support the latest apps or editing programs. They have problems with the most current coding software too. My students get frustrated with how difficult it is to work on the older equipment.
