This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are loving, passionate, and filled with potential. Their success stories multiply every year and bring everyone in the building a sense of pride.

While some statistics would label them as "at-risk" they so much more than that; they are our futures.

We want to provide our students with the chance to reach out beyond our walls.

Their ELA education shows them places they've never seen and sets them off on adventures they've never even imagined through written word.

My Project

As North Carolina re-evaluates its state standards in English/Language Arts, it is becoming more and more important to introduce students to complex texts that are engaging challenging guides for writing and storytelling. While the classics aid teachers in this, students should also have access to contemporary texts that explore new concepts.

Hugo and Nebula Award winner Binti, by Nnedi Okorafor is a novel that is engaging, challenging and relevant to so many students.

A class set of this novella would help students understand a different culture while exploring the genre of Afrofuturism and connecting to a character who is simultaneously an outsider and a survivor.
